LeDomduVin: Hong Kong International Schools

Hong Kong International Schools

International Schools are expensive in Hong Kong, and it is difficult to make a choice (and decide whether it will be a good choice or not) depending on many different factors (e.g.: main language, curriculum, hours, extra activities, proximity, transport, etc...), yet, it most predominantly comes down to cost (some schools have so many fees and even hidden or extra fees).

Basically, and as always, it is a question of money!!! And, if you have a local contract and have everything to pay by yourself (like me), not like so many French ex-pats I met who have both the rent and the school for their kids entirely paid by their company... (so lucky).... well, putting your kids in an International School will cost you an arm and a leg to pay per month.

So I browsed the Internet to study the various Hong Kong International Schools and their respective prices. Upon my searches, I stumbled across an interesting article from Hong Kong Tatler listing the Best International Schools in Hong Kong in 2017 (read the full article here).

Based on this article I decided to create a table to be able to compare them at one glance instead of having to go back and forth with the slides in the article.

Hong Kong Best International Schools Comparison Table 2017

If you have difficulties viewing the table above as a picture, I also saved it as a PDF document that will be surely easier to read and print if needed (click here to view it)

I also made a simple chart to easily spot the price differences

Hong Kong Best International Schools Comparison Chart 2017

The list above is non-exhaustive and only based on the article from Hong Kong Tatler (read the full article with more details about each school here)

The stated prices are only approximate and can only be read as an indication, other fees may have not been included, like
  • Inscription fees which could represent an addition of HK$3,000 to HK$5,000+
  • Debenture or deposit which could represent HK$10,000 to HK$50,000+
  • Uniforms (School + Sport)
  • School Supplies
  • Etc...
Therefore the total amount in the table and in the chart may vary depending on the school and the grade, and the additional fees.

Yet, to give you an example, the cost of one kid at the French International School of Hong Kong (Lycée Francais International de Hong Kong) is roughly between HKD 120,000 (Euros 14,340 - for the small classes) and roughly HKD180,000 (Euros 21,500 - the higher school grades).

Which is insane to me! Moreover, these amounts above do not include many other fees like:
  • Application fee: HK$2,200 (Euros 262)
  • Assessment fee international stream: HK$1,000 (Euros 120)
  • French stream (American international section): HK$500 (Euros 60)
  • Debenture:
    • Private: HK$90,000 (Euros 10,754) - The value is revised to HK$120,000 (Euros 14,340) for all new intakes from the 2023-24 school year onwards).
    • Corporate: HK$250,000 (Euros 29,872)
NB: you can always go to the "Lycée Francais International de Hong Kong" website for more details at https://www.fis.edu.hk/admission/tuition-fees/

And if you, like me, always get confused with the school grades, here is School Grade Equivalents Table US / UK / France for you to better understand.

Hope this little post will help some of you, parents, to easily make your choice.

Good Luck.
